First Church in Sterling
A church where members are associated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, the United Church of Christ, or are interdenominational members.

Our church’s mission statement provides a context within which many activities and programs are conducted:

The First Church in Sterling is a caring community providing a rich, interdenominational Christian experience. Our mission is to continue a long tradition of living the spirit of Jesus; to discover, celebrate, and share God’s love and peace through our worship, service, work, and play.

Our mission encompasses four main areas:

  • Worship Every Sunday, we get together to hear God’s word and to celebrate God’s presence. Through readings, music, and discussion, we take time to make a spiritual connection to God, drawing inspiration, hope, and love of life. We have people of all ages attending services, and people of all ages participating in the services.
  • Fellowship Our church members seek to provide community for each other. While we work to help others, sometimes we need each other, to support each other in times of need and difficulty. We also share our personal concerns and our celebrations, developing a better understanding of ourselves in the process
  • Education As soon as we’re born and throughout our entire life, we are always learning. And this includes our religious learning, in order to develop a deep understanding of the Bible and Jesus’ teachings. At the First Church, our comprehensive educational program begins with our children in kindergarten, continuing through adulthood.
  • Community The First Church is actively involved in our community, both locally and globally. The church building itself is being used just about every day for a wide variety of activities, and serves as a local community center for several groups. But our community involvement extends well beyond Sterling, as we care about, and strive to improve, the welfare of others wherever they might be.
